New Zealand’s indigenous language, Te Reo Māori features heavily across the live and on-demand content made available through the Māori Plus platform built by Accedo
Global video technology provider Accedo has been recognised for its role in transforming the MĀORI+ video streaming service, securing victory in the OTT Platform – New Zealand category of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting+ Awards 2024.
The accolade highlights the 20+ years of experience Accedo has within the video industry globally, and the successful collaboration with Whakaata Māori, the indigenous language television service provider in New Zealand (Aotearoa).
MĀORI+ offers free-to-air and on-demand content entirely in Te Reo Māori, the indigenous language of New Zealand. Through their partnership with Accedo, Whakaata Māori has completely revitalised the MĀORI+ platform, successfully increasing accessibility and viewer engagement with Te Reo content. The MĀORI+ platform has had a significant impact on its audience and New Zealand society as a whole, providing a platform for Māori cultural development and supporting a unique New Zealand identity within a global society.
The reimagined platform boasts several key features designed to enhance the user experience. Introducing user profiles allows for a more personalised experience, whilst adding dedicated kids’ profiles ensures age-appropriate content for younger viewers. Additionally, improved search and filtering functionalities make it easier for users to discover the content they want to watch.
Accedo’s world-class Content Management System (CMS) further empowers Whakaata Māori with real-time control over the app’s user interface and content management. This flexibility allows the Whakaata Māori team to curate content collections with specific tags, such as highlighting a particular actor or showcasing upcoming content.
Matt Kossatz, SVP Asia Pacific at Accedo, celebrated the popularity of the MĀORI+ platform and its ability to provide access to engaging Te Reo content that can otherwise be difficult to access. He emphasised how the revamped platform offers a more personalised experience and simplifies content discovery for viewers.
Andrew McNaughton, Director of Technology at Whakaata Māori, shared their vision for further growth with MĀORI+, saying, “We have aspirations to grow MĀORI+ further, helping us to bring life to Te Reo content and showcase the very best in Māori media have to offer across Aotearoa and the world. With this refresh, Accedo has given us the flexibility to adapt the UI and add additional features as we grow. We look forward to the next stage for this service.”
Currently, MĀORI+ is available across various platforms in New Zealand, including iOS, Android, Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, and the web. This widespread accessibility ensures Te Reo content reaches a wider audience.
Accedo’s award win underscores their commitment to providing innovative solutions that empower platforms like MĀORI+ to promote and celebrate indigenous languages.
The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting+ Awards 2024 recognises innovation and excellence in projects that advance the field of broadcasting in areas such as digitalisation and engineering. It showcases the remarkable activities of broadcast companies, as well as industry partners and vendors in the Asia-Pacific region.
